Steel for Nuclear Power

Steel plates for nuclear power applications form the foundation of critical equipment in both the nuclear island and conventional island of nuclear power plants, serving in the manufacture of reactor pressure vessels, steam generators, steel containment vessels, and other core pressure-bearing components. Operating under extreme conditions of high temperature, high pressure, and intense radiation, and directly impacting nuclear safety, these steels are subject to the most stringent technical standards of any steel category.

Product Advantages

  • Ultra-High Strength and Pressure-Bearing Capacity

For example, the yield strength of SA-738 Gr.B steel plate can reach 485 MPa, while the tensile strength of SA533 Gr.B Cl.1 can reach 620-795 MPa, sufficient to withstand the immense pressure inside the reactor.

  • Excellent Low-Temperature and High-Temperature Toughness

The plates are required to maintain high impact toughness at -45°C or even -60°C, while certain critical components (such as the HPR1000 safety injection tank) also require a high-temperature tensile strength of no less than 600 MPa at 150°C, ensuring stable performance under extreme temperatures.

  • Strict Resistance to Irradiation Embrittlement

Through strict control of harmful elements such as Cu, P, and S, the degradation of steel performance under neutron irradiation is minimized, ensuring the safety of equipment throughout its entire service life.

  • Superior Weldability

Through low carbon equivalent design, it is ensured that after on-site welding of large structures, the joint performance remains comparable to that of the base metal.

  • Ultra-High Purity and Homogeneity

The control standards for inclusions (such as P and S) in steel are far higher than those for ordinary steel. For example, steel used in nuclear island equipment requires P and S contents of less than 0.01% and 0.005%, respectively.
